Jedi Academy: Return of the Padawan, by Jeffrey Brown, is essentially Diary of a Wimpy Kid set in the Star Wars universe. Being the sequel to the original Jedi Academy, the adventures of our main protagonist, Roan Novachez, continue. This time, he starts his second school year at the Jedi Academy with ambitious dreams of becoming a Jedi Pilot! Readers of the first book will find delight in seeing Roan and his friends return, while new readers can get a chance to immerse themselves in another corner of the Star Wars universe. Apart from Roan, the other characters include Pasha, Roan’s new friend; Gaiana, the girl that he likes; as well as the typical school bully, Cronah. You will also see the familiar face of Yoda, everybody’s favourite green alien, as well as different species of the Star Wars Universe.
Return of the Padawan shines through its unique style of writing, told through the eyes of Roan. The drawings and comics are cute and scribbly, while Roan adds his own style of humour. I really liked finding out his thoughts and it felt like it was truly written by this kid! The novel is also full of Star Wars references, so it will delight many fans out there. Also, the setting of the novel, the Jedi Academy, serves as a perfect parallel to real schools. Even though these guys are on another planet, you can still relate to them.
After reading the first book and now this one, I would definitely recommend it to teens. Although you may think it’s targeted towards kids, there is still plenty to find for older readers. Especially, fans who are familiar with Star Wars and all its unique landscapes and creatures will find reason to read this book. I would definitely suggest watching a film or two, if you haven’t seen them before!
Even though this is the second book in the series, it is simple enough that you can familiarize yourself with these characters by just reading this one. However, the first novel is available at Richmond Hill Public Library, so definitely read that one first, if you can! Jedi Academy: Return of the Padawan is a simple and silly novel that will surely make you smile. If you’re looking for an alternative to Big Nate or Wimpy Kid, this is the next one on your list!
